Here's a technical analysis of the first few lines of copy on this page.
1. "Explode Your
Sales and Dominate Your Market"
We're all used to
seeing long, screaming, benefit-driven, headlines written by 'expert
copywriters.' These may have been effective a few years ago, but now
we tend to tune out to such copy, in the same way that we tune out
and ignore advertising.
By contrast my
headline is designed to be a simple yet bold statement that engages
your interest. If you don't want to know how to 'explode your sales
and dominate your market' you shouldn't be reading this...so I know that
I will be attracting only people I want to talk to.
2. "Sorry, but I'm
afraid I have some bad news for you."
This is a
shameless attention grabber. We all know that bad news sells, and
if it is something that affects us personally, we can't help but read on
to find out more. Bet you had to know what your bad news was, right?
3. "You are losing
sales and profits by the minute."
A basic
psychological principle is that we are all motivated more by fear of
loss than by hope of gain. So the point here is to focus not on
future profits, but the money you are losing right now...a very powerful
motivator. This sentence also suggests urgency, a great incentive to
maximize sales.
4. "If only you
had contacted me sooner, you could be looking at your shopping cart
stats right now, smiling contentedly at all the extra sales."
Here I create a
'mind movie,' so that you visualize the immediate benefits of working
with me - increased sales, a practical benefit. Visualizing the
benefit increases your desire, and the likelihood of taking
action to acquire that benefit.
5. "Or in the
Mercedes showroom, picking up the keys for your brand-new convertible."
The first mind
movie is immediately reinforced with a second one, this one focusing on
the emotional benefit - the pleasure of spending the additional
wealth you are about to acquire. We all make buying decisions for
emotional reasons, then justify them with logical reasons - but it
is always the the emotional decision that drives the sale.
6. "Shame you are
missing out, huh?"
This reinforces
the 'fear or loss.' In my first draft, this read 'shame you missed out.'
But in revising, I changed it to 'shame you are missing out' to
emphasize the fact that you are continuing to lose money...and
will do until you take action.
7. "But don't
panic."
I've highlighted
your problem, and shown that you need to take action urgently.
Now here comes the promise of my solution. The words 'don't panic'
suggest that you can rest assured because you have found exactly what
you need right here.
8. "Because here's
the good news. "
'Because' is an
incredibly powerful and persuasive word. It suggests a 'reason why' -
and we all look for reasons why we should take a particular course of
action. Research shows that we are conditioned to respond positively
to the word 'because', even if the given reason doesn't make much
sense. Of course, it's much more effective if your reasons are sound!
9. "If you're
quick, then you can stem the losses."
"If...then"
constructions are also very effective. We are programmed to follow the
logic of such sentences, and tend to accept such statements as being
true, even with minimal evidence to support them. "If you're quick" also
restates the urgency and importance of taking action now.
10. "Squeeze
double the revenue from every marketing dollar you spend."
Pain is a very
powerful motivator,
and that includes financial pain. Any marketer knows how much it hurts
to spend even more money on Google Adwords, or any other form of
advertising. So a suggestion that this pain can be reduced
considerably will strike a chord with any serious marketer. It is
also good to be specific...not just more revenue, but 'double the
revenue' and 'three times the profit.'

That's just a
partial explanation. I could go on...but I think you get the point. Now
you might wonder why I have expended so much effort to explain all this
to you. I'll let one of the truly great copywriters summarize:

two a penny. Solid proof is as rare as...well, solid gold. And worth

Million Case Study
You may not know
the name Belron, but you are probably familiar with the brands it
operates worldwide - Safelite, Autoglass, Carglass, etc. Belron
is a multi-billion dollar company in the windshield replacement
business....but a few years ago, it had a problem.
Belron makes its
money by signing massive deals with car insurance companies to replace
broken windshields for their insured customers. Its technology is the
