What Makes a Good Copywriter?

So how do you decide which writer is the best one for your project?

Of course, the first thing to do is check some samples of their work. Does the copy read cleanly and neatly? Does it interest you in the product for sale? And does it show professionalism and style?

Those are important questions, but there are many other factors to consider. One is availability. The very best writers are typically booked up weeks or even months in advance. Does the writer you have in mind have time available to take on the job?

Cost is a factor, too, naturally. But don't be tempted to look for the cheapest rate, as that can be a huge mistake. The best writers are clearly able to charge higher rates for their services, but it is well worth paying the extra if they get you the kind of results you are looking for. Is it worth paying an extra $10,000 if that generates an additional $500,000 in profits? You bet!

Another key consideration is the ability to hit deadlines. If your project needs to be live by a certain date, ensure that the writer is able to meet that requirement, and that they take the commitment seriously. It's human nature to finish a project very close to its deadline, and writers are certainly not immune to that kind of problem. So make sure that they are professional enough to deliver the goods without rushing everything at the last minute.

A good writer will want to have an ongoing relationship with you as a client. If that is going to work, you need to find someone that you are comfortable with – someone who you like as a person and can develop an ongoing relationship with.

Most important of all, a good copywriter is one who sells a lot of products! So be sure to check out their resume to find out what kind of results they have achieved for other businesses, and what they might be able to do for you.
