Freelance Copywriting

Should you hire a full-time writer or use a freelancer? In my opinion, definitely the latter - and not just because I am a freelancer myself.

There are certainly some advantages to having an in-house writer. The writer will become very familiar with your products, will always be available to work on your projects, and will probably work for very reasonable rates. But unfortunately, there are many disadvantages.

When you are using copy to sell products and services, second rate is never good enough - you need the very best copy available on every job. Quite frankly, a first-class copywriter is unlikely to be satisfied with the salary that a full-time job pays - knowing that there is big money out there in the freelance world for a professional writer.

Also, if you have only one writer to call on, you are stuck with a limited set of ideas. Even the most creative writers can only come up with some many ideas on one topic before becoming stale. And if you have a lot of copy to be written, you may find deadlines getting missed as the projects pile up.

But when you hire a freelancer, you are always able to call on the best person for the job. If one freelancer starts to run out of ideas, you can switch to another one without any problems, and get a whole new perspective on your projects.

You also don't have to worry about your writing becoming ill, going on holiday or leaving the country - there is always another freelancer who can take up the slack. And although you may pay higher rates for a freelancer, you only need to call on that resource when you have copy that needs to be written - no chance of having a writer on a salary with nothing to do.

Although there are pros and cons with both approaches, using a freelancer is definitely a very strong option for most projects, and one that is highly recommended for most businesses.
